Project ASSERT (Alcohol & Substance abuse Services, Education and Referral to Treatment) is a program that helps Emergency Department (ED) patients who demonstrate risky alcohol and drug use behavior to access treatment and care. Project ASSERT provides comprehensive care and prevention by putting substance abuse in the context of other health and safety needs.
Staff from Project ASSERT goal is to make it easier for the patient to make healthy changes in their life. This conversation normally consists of a motivational interviewing conversation to help explore how ready the patient is to make healthy changes, and assistance with developing a behavior change action plan.
When the patient agrees to treatment for their drug or alcohol behavior, the recovery coach will help connect the patient to a substance abuse treatment center as well as referrals to health and social services, and primary care services so patients have complete access to care, even after they have left the ED. Project ASSERT is a valuable resource in the community that strives to provide any help ED patients with substance use dependency issues may need to make them well, overall.
